University of Richmond

Planning Your Program

Students from any major can go on to graduate school in medicine, dentistry, physical therapy and other pre-health programs.  In any given year, approximately 250 students, including first years through fourth years from a range of academic disciplines, take advantage of the pre-health studies program.

Besides a handful of basic science classes and a strong admissions test score, requirements for admission to medical school are not written in stone.  Students, regardless of major, may choose to take additional science classes or medical humanities courses, work in a research lab or participate in a clinical externship.

Virtually all U.S. medical schools require the following science coursework. The classes in parentheses are Richmond equivalents:

1 year of biology (BIOL 201, 205)
1 year of inorganic chemistry (CHEM 141, 317/326)
1 year of organic chemistry (CHEM 205, 206)
1 year of physics (PHYS 127-128 or 131- 132/134)

In addition to the aforementioned courses, students are encouraged to complete coursework in our medical humanities curriculum.
