Clinical Opportunities

Medical exposure is a virtual requirement for entry into any health profession. Richmond offers an EMT training course most years for students who want hands-on experience caring for patients. Many of our EMT-certified students are members of our on-campus University of Richmond Emergency Medical Services (UREMS) organization.

There are numerous community healthcare organizations to help University of Richmond students engage in meaningful volunteer experiences. Opportunities include:

Children’s Hospital of Richmond
Volunteer positions at Children’s Hospital of Richmond are available to college students at the start of every fall, spring and summer semester. Opportunities include playing games with patients, assisting therapists, and greeting hospital guests.

CrossOver Healthcare Ministry
This clinic, with locations downtown and on the West End, provides free medical and dental care to those who could not afford it otherwise. Volunteer opportunities include medical scribing, medical translation, and administrative support. Student internships are also available.

Goochland Cares
This free clinic located west of campus provides medical, dental, mental health and medical transportation services, in addition to operating a food pantry and clothes closet. Volunteer positions are available in all of these areas.

Health Brigade
Located downtown, Health Brigade is Virginia’s oldest free and charitable clinic, offering medical, mental health, community outreach and care coordination services for low-income and uninsured persons. Volunteer opportunities include medical assisting, medical scribing, patient intake and Spanish interpretation.

Lakeside Volunteer Rescue Squad
This rescue squad primarily services Northern Henrico County and the Lakeside Community.

Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad
Headquartered near campus, this rescue squad primarily services western Henrico County.

VCU Health
The Volunteer Services office at VCU Health facilitates placements for college students at the start of every semester. An application and health forms must be completed by stated deadlines.

World Pediatric Project
This Richmond-based organization provides medical care for critically ill children in Central America and the Caribbean. Volunteer opportunities include welcoming families at the airport, taking families on outings during their downtime before or after surgery, accompanying families to medical appointments and providing social and emotional support to families. The WPP also offers five different internship opportunities for college students.

Additionally, the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) connects students with service opportunities throughout the greater Richmond area. CCE staff members can help you find a placement that fits your skills and interests.
